I ask for an immediate Cease Fire among primary partisans

cross-posted from DailyKos
I understand that tempers are running high here and over at MyDD among the supporters of the various Democratic Presidential candidates.  The pie fight over the "1984" ad has been both entertaining and infuriating at times, and has sharpened some of the lines dividing the camps.

None of that matters for the next 12 and a half hours.

John and Elizabeth Edwards are calling a press conference for tomorrow at Noon.  Elizabeth has been fighting breast cancer since 2004, and John recently cancelled a campaign appearance in Iowa to return home and attend a doctor's meeting with Elizabeth.

It sounds as if there might be a health crisis in the Edwards family.

We're more than a year out from the Convention.  Taking a half-day off from vocally advocating for our primary candidates of choice is not going to negatively affect any of the campaigns.

There is something much more important to focus on right now.

So I'm calling for an immediate cease-fire among all Presidential campaign supporters.

For the sake of decency, let's take the next twelve hours and change to offer prayers/good wishes/positive vibrations/etc. to John and Elizabeth Edwards and their children, and put aside our intraparty squabbling for just a moment, in recognition of the fact that our candidates are human, and the family of one of them might be hurting greatly tonight.

The health of a candidate's spouse is not a political issue--shouldn't we show our candidates' families the support they need when adversity strikes them?  They give up so much of their lives and time to promote our party's image and ideals.  The least we can do is take a little time out of our activism to recognize those who carry our standard when they are in times of need or despair.

I join Kos and Jonathan in hoping that this turns out to be a false alarm, and that Elizabeth is in good health.  If she is otherwise, then I offer my prayers for her speedy return to health, and Senator Edwards's return to the campaign trail.

This is a complicated issue. Almost certainly, many parents of children in Iraq will loose those children today. And is this a 'truce', a 'suggestion', or a 'command'? Of course, if it's a command masquerading as a 'truce', there will be no potential for genuine consolation in it for Edwards' family. Only the commanders will be giving any consolation, not the community.

This is me saying that I will personally refrain from instigating or furthering any intraparty disputes.  I would hope that people would willingly comply with that request.  It can't be a command since I have no authority to enforce it, and I wouldn't order anyone to act with decency--I would imagine/hope they'd do it willingly.

this just isn't the time for arguing amongst ourselves.

Also, I did not vote in the above poll. Democracy should not be transformed into a vehicle for censorship. I plan to institute my own, unilateral truce for the time being. But voting for what people should be able to say is Orwellian.

There's no "should be able to say," just "should avoid saying."  There's no enforcement mechanism, you won't be required to attend re-Neducation if you decide to be a jerk and attack one of the candidates.  It's just that attacking one of the candidates, considering these events, would be a dick move.

Literarily speaking, I do not think "Orwellian" means what you think it means.

I had thought of that. The aim may be slightly askew, but it's a mighty powerful shell. And the whole web bears a slight taint of the Orwellian, anyway.
