$3.7 million will buy one heck of a house. In Venice, Florida, it can get you a 3,500 square foot waterfront Italian Renaissance-style mansion. In Arcadia, you could pay the salaries of every city employee for over a year. In Sarasota, you could buy a nice home and keep the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen up and running for years, instead of watching it close. (Hell, you could operate the entire township of Belfast, Maine for a full fiscal year if you wanted to!)
If you're Congressional candidate Vern Buchanan, though, you wouldn't want to buy an entire house with $3.7 million. Just a seat in one.
Yes, this week Republican nominee Vern Buchanan decided to throw another $700,000 of his own money into his campaign, bringing his personal contributions to over $3,700,000 for the cycle. He has self-funded more than any other Congressional candidate in America this cycle.
Poll after poll after poll have all shown Vern Buchanan and his far-right agenda being rejected by the voters of the 13th District in favor of the positve message that Christine Jennings offers. Vern believes that if he simply sinks more money into promoting his failed message and bad policies then he'll regain some momentum. (Apparently supporting the privatization of social security in southwest Florida hasn't been winning voters over as well as he'd like.)
Vern's even called in some big guns to help his campaign. First, he was proud to tout his endorsement by Mark Foley. Then his endorsement by Tom Reynolds. Then his endorsements from Dennis Hastert and John Shimkus. Finally, he brought in Dick Cheney to help out. For some reason, though I can't quite figure out why, these big names haven't done all that much to help vern's floundering efforts.
So he did what comes naturally to people with more money than sense--he pulled out his checkbok to try and make his problem go away.
We need to send a message to Vern and his DC-cheerleading squad that this seat is not for sale, and that NO seat in Congress is for sale. If you can, please help Christine Jennings counter the Buchanan attack machine with a contribution via ActBlue. (and don't forget to add a Netroots Penny!)
If you aren't able to contribute, please vote for Christine to receive the support of the 21st Century Democrats by clicking here.
And if you're in the area of the 13th District, please volunteer to help Christine take back Katherine Harris's seat.
This is a critical moment for the 13th District, for Florida, and for the country. If we retake this seat, we can restore accountability and integrity to Congress (and we can really add insult to Katherine Harris's upcoming injury at the hands of Senator Nelson). Please help us reclaim this seat in the name of responsible leadership and good government. Please support Christine Jennings!
